Miracles happen in Lake Placid.
Located inside Adirondack State Park, the largest state park in the United States, Lake Placid was named after an adjacent lake. Whatever your reason for a visit, you will find this quaint village a remarkable New York hideaway.
Lake Placid, the first location in North America to play host to two Olympic Games, has quite a bit of sports history. Most famous for hosting the 1980 Winter Olympics, due in large part to the "Miracle on Ice," when the American ice hockey team upset the heavily favored Soviet national team 4 to 3, Lake Placid was also the host site for the 1932 Winter Olympics. The Village of Lake Placid is a popular winter sports training facility, boasting the Olympic Center, which presents the greatest amount of ice surface on Earth. Lake Placid is also host of an annual Ironman Triathlon, one of only six held in the continental United States. ESPN also kicked off their "Great Outdoor Games" in Lake Placid in July of 2000. In 1898, Lake Placid became one of the first locations in the United States to have a golf course, and is home to more golf courses than any other area in the Adirondacks. Fly-fishing is a year round option at West Branch, a six mile stretch of the Au Sable. Or if you are feeling extremely adventurous, you can join the Adirondack Forty-Sixers, a hiking/climbing group; all you have to do is scale forty-six High Peaks in the Adirondack Mountains. Alpine and cross-country skiing are also two popular ways to spend wintertime in Lake Placid, only the courageous tackle Whiteface Mountain. Whiteface Mountain's summit is at 4,867 feet, skiable from 4,650 feet, and features the greatest vertical drop in the Eastern United States, at 3,430 feet. Lake Placid is also is one of the few places in the contiguous U.S. which offers dogsledding, sleigh riding and one of only three actual bobsled rides in North and South America. Don't think that Lake Placid doesn't exist outside winter; canoeing, kayaking, whitewater rafting, boating, golfing, tennis, camping, biking/hiking and going to the beach are very popular warm weather activities.
If you enjoy sports, but don't want to play them, the 1932 & 1980 Lake Placid Winter Olympic Museum allows you to live vicariously. Displaying uniforms, equipment, video rooms and changing displays, you can relive the Winter Olympics anytime of year. If you aren't a sports enthusiast, you can still find plenty of things to do in Lake Placid. Mirror Lake Boat Rentals take you out on the waters of Mirror Lake. The Lake Placid-North Elba Historical Society Museum proudly displays the 200-year history of the area. Located in a former train depot, the waiting and baggage rooms have been converted into museum wings, showcasing farming tools, photography, musical instruments and much more. Take a visit to the John Brown Farm State Historical Site, where a monument and a restored farmhouse mark the burial site of abolitionist John Brown. Guided tours through the farmhouse are available, as is winter skiing. Lake Placid also offers an array of restaurants, many featuring some of the stunning backdrops found in the state.
